Our Story
Valley Vineyards has been part of the Morrow, Ohio community since 1970, offering a welcoming place for friends and families to gather over great wine, craft beer, and fresh, local food. What began as a small family vineyard has grown into one of Southwest Ohio’s most loved destinations, known for its warm atmosphere and genuine hospitality.
How It All Started
Our story traces back to founder Ken Schuchter, a local farm boy with a deep love for the land and a dream to revitalize his family’s property in the picturesque hills of the Little Miami River Valley. In 1969, Ohio State University viticulturist Garth Cahoon visited the farm and recognized its prime potential for grape growing. Schuchter ordered what he believed to be enough vine stock to plant two acres, but a miscalculation resulted in enough vines for twenty.
What could have been a costly mistake instead became the foundation of a thriving winery, and by 1970, Valley Vineyards was officially born inside the family’s own barn.
A Legacy of Community
From the very beginning, Valley Vineyards represented more than wine — it represented the spirit of community. In 1971, the first Valley Vineyards Wine Festival drew an incredible 10,000 attendees, showing just how quickly the winery had captured the hearts of local residents.
Over the years, our popular Friday and Saturday cookout dinners — where guests grill their own steaks, salmon, or shrimp — became a cherished tradition, bringing people together from all over the region. For generations of Morrow residents, Valley Vineyards has served as a gathering place to relax, celebrate, and enjoy time with family and friends.
A Pioneer of Ohio Wine
Ken Schuchter’s influence extended far beyond his own vineyard. As a pioneer in Ohio’s developing wine industry, he helped shape the state’s future and inspired countless winemakers. His contributions included:
- Founding the Ohio Wine Producers Association
- Helping form the Ohio Grape Industries Program
- Mentoring winemakers across the entire region
Through his dedication and leadership, Ohio’s wine industry grew from only 13 wineries in 1975 to hundreds today.
